Geography
At Bretherton Endowed C of E Primary School Geography is based on the National Curriculum and the EYFS. We have moved away from using the Cornerstones Curriculum package on a two year cycle to designing our own with the support of a school advisor . It is our intention to inspire in pupils a life long curiosity and fascination about the world and it’s people.
Teaching will aim to:
- develop pupils’ knowledge about places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, together with an understanding of the earth’s physical and human processes
- deepen pupils’ understanding of the interaction between physical and human geography, and the formation and use of landscapes and environments
- encourage an awareness and discussion of current issues and issues which enrich or endanger our world e.g. climate change
- encourage pupils to use and apply geographical skills and knowledge in their learning
- develop pupils’ knowledge of the Bretherton and Lancashire area and how it has changed over time.
At Bretherton we teach Geography through a range of ways. Children compare our local area to places in the UK and around the world using maps, atlases, photographs, technology and information books. We use current affairs to raise global awareness and encourage children to make the links between their learning and the real world. Wherever possible we get out into the local and surrounding areas for fieldwork and invite visitors into school who can further enhance the children's understanding of the diversity of our planet and the people on it.
Geography Areas of Action 2023
Aswell as working with a consultant on writing and sequencing our Geography curriculum, we are embarking on exciting links with two local high school Geography subject teachers to ensure we have built in challenge and depth. |
